Shuhui is 21 years old and is a third-year student studying sociology at the university. Because of her well-proportioned shape, good posture, and clear female characteristics, she was selected earlier in the year by Professor Zhang to be the nude model for a variety of publications on the human body and anatomy. These publications have been well received, with some becoming standard posters and teaching material, and Shuhui was pleased to be able to contribute to scientific research and popularisation.

Recently, the city's health department has planned the publication of three new teaching materials: "Demonstration of Post Mortem Body Examination - External Examination", "Preparation of the Body before a Funeral" and "Guide to the Cremation Procedure". To do this, Professor Zhang needed to find three female students at the university to model for the publications. Professor Zhang initially approached Shuhui about appearing in the 'Body Examination Demonstration'. He told Shuhui that the publication was of great significance and could become reference material. After days of hesitation, Shuhui finally agreed. Professor Zhang made an appointment with her at a small mortuary in the city centre that had just been renovated. The mortuary was equipped with a modern crematorium and a wooden beam for short-distance hangings.

At the beginning of June, Shuhui bid farewell to all her friends and relatives. Professor Zhang specially provided Shuhui with laxatives to reduce the risk of her body decaying after her death. A day after taking the laxative, Shuhui arrived at the mortuary alone. As it was the last day of her life, she purposely wore a black cheongsam, the formal dress for female university students.

When Shuhui arrived, she was warmly greeted by Professor Zhang, who showed her around the mortuary. The crematorium was burning the body of a pregnant woman who had died during childbirth, and the firelight through the glass made the room even brighter. Pointing to the autopsy table, Professor Zhang said, "In a moment, we will put you on this for a closer examination, and we will surely be able to know your body better than you know it yourself."

Shuhui then noticed her good friend Li Han lying on the body rack in the corner, covered with a transparent plastic sheet. Li Han was the model Professor Zhang found for "Preparation of the Body before a Funeral". Although she was willing to sacrifice her life for science, she was afraid to come to the mortuary and had to have the coroner go to her dormitory to inject her with poison before transporting the body to the mortuary. After mourning for her best friend, Shuhui heard Professor Zhang say, "Let's get started."

Professor Zhang led her under the wooden beam and instructed her to remove all her clothes. Shuhui thought she could pass away with dignity in her cheongsam, but Professor Chang said, "You will surely be incontinent at the time of death, and urine soaking through your knickers and cheongsam will cause more embarrassment." Shuhui then removed her cheongsam and shoes, placed them in the bucket aside, and removed her knickers and placed them on the floor. This was when Professor Zhang brought in the mortuary's female assistant, Zhemei, and coroner Li Jianliang.

Dr. Lee instructed Zhemei to hold Shuhui's arms behind her while he picked up a stethoscope and listened to Shuhui's heartbeat for a minute, and checked her state of health. After making sure that Shuhui was healthy, he indicated to Professor Zhang, "She's ready to be hanged."

Hearing that she was about to die, Shuhui's grief was suddenly real, and she almost cried as she looked at the noose on the gallows, thinking that her young life would end there, before her body is thoroughly touched by the coroner. Zhenmei had to comfort her, "Please step on the stool. Rest assured that we will make good use of your body, by checking it thoroughly in our upcoming 'Body Surface Examination Demonstration' publication."

After Shuhui stepped onto the wooden stool, Professor Zhang briefed Shuhui on the dos and don'ts during the execution. He said, "This short-distance hanging will be rather painful and you will die from asphyxiation. The pain will last for several minutes, so you should be mentally prepared. Once you are hung up, please make sure not to scratch around. Raising your head as much as possible when the noose is tight will reduce the bruises on your body surface. If you can feel that you are about to urinate incontinently, please try to spread your legs and urinate into the red basin below."

After confirming that Shuhui had no other last words, Dr. Li kicked the stool under Shuhui's feet hard from behind, and Shuhui then hung in the air with a very painful look on her face. She tried to grab the rope with her hands, but it was in vain. Her legs stirred and her arms swung about, and for seven or eight minutes she struggled and urinated.

It was a long time before Shuhui was completely silent, hanging powerlessly in the air. Possibly because her death was painful or because she still had many regrets, Shuhui's eyes were half-opened, her eyes rolled back, and half of her tongue was hanging out.

Dr. Li pushed the body trolley under the gallows and put Shuhui's dangling legs on it. He then stepped up onto a stool and used a knife to cut the rope. With Shuhui's body lying on her back on the trolley and the noose untied, Dr. Li dragged the trolley into the morgue.

Dr. Li and Zhemei lifted Shuhui's body and moved it to the autopsy table. Shuhui's head was tilted back, her tongue hanging out, and a look of regret was in her lifeless eyes.

Dr. Li positioned the body in the standard anatomical position and closed Shuhui's eyes, tucked the tongue back into her mouth, and tidied up her body. Zhemei then found a blue cloth to cover Shuhui's torso and also tied a pre-prepared body wristband to Shuhui's right wrist. Professor Zhang also came in and turned off the main lighting in the mortuary, leaving only the lamp above the autopsy table. The three stood side by side next to Shuhui's body and Professor Zhang said:

"Shuhui was a good young woman. She gave her youthful life for our educational publication 'Demonstration of Post Mortem Body Examination - External Examination'. Let us observe a minute of silence in her memory. "

张教授带着她来到木梁下方，指示她脱去全部衣物。淑慧以为自己能穿着旗袍体面地离世，但张教授说：“死亡时你一定会失禁，尿浸透你的内裤和旗袍，反而会使你难堪。”淑慧于是脱去了旗袍和鞋子，放在一旁的桶内，并脱下了内裤放在地上。这时，张教授找来了太平间的女助手哲美和李建良法医。

李法医是一个不苟言笑的人。他不仅工作认真仔细，心理承受能力也很强。大部分本市的死刑犯人，以及国民美人评选第二至第十名选手的处决都是由他执行的。李法医指示哲美在身后握住淑慧的双臂，自己则拿起听诊器听了淑慧一分钟的心跳，并对她的健康状况进行了检查和询问。在确定淑慧健康后，他向张教授表示：“可以执行了。”

听到自己马上要死去了，淑慧的悲伤一下子真实起来，她看着绞刑架上的绳套，想着自己年轻的生命就将结束在那里，身体还要被法医仔细触摸，几乎哭了出来。哲美不得不在一旁安慰她：“请上去吧。你放心，我们一定会利用好你的尸体，将《尸体体表检查示教》拍好。”

在淑慧站上木凳后，张教授向淑慧介绍了注意事项。他说：“这种短距绞刑会比较痛苦，你会因窒息死亡。痛苦会持续好几分钟，你要有心理准备。吊起来后，请一定不要乱抓乱挠。绳套勒紧时，尽可能抬起头，能减轻体表的伤痕。如果你能感觉到快要尿失禁了，请尽量分开双腿，尿到下面的红色盆里。”
