The Story of Han (II)

After Shuhui was hanged and the filming of the "Post Mortem Body Examination - External Examination" was completed (for more details, please refer to "Shuhui's Story"), Coroner Dr Li and his assistant Zhemei took a short break before they started to process Han's body.

As Han had been dead for some time, the body, which had been lying on a tray since her death, had already developed rigor mortis. Dr Li and Zhemei carried the tray to the edge of the autopsy table, and slid the body onto the table. The stiff, naked body contrasted sharply with Liting's body, which was still burning in the cremator in the background.

As he had to wait for Liting's cremation to be completed, Dr Li left the autopsy room and started to prepare the tools needed to handle Han's body, including a suction pump for extracting visceral bodily fluids from the abdominal cavity, an embalming machine to inject embalming fluids, and consumables such as syringes. Dr Li also filled out Han's death certificate and filed and organised the required documents. After Liting's body was cremated, Zhemei swept out the ashes into an urn and cleaned out the crematorium. She then removed the plastic sheet covering Han's body, pressing the stiff arms as far as possible to the sides of the body, and took photographs of the body for archival purposes.

Before proceeding further, Zhemei also needed to ensure the body was clean. She attached a shower head to the hose under the autopsy table and carefully cleaned the body. Since Han had died by execution, there were no infectious diseases or other health risks, and the body was relatively fresh, Zhemei did not need to disinfect it thoroughly.

With both the body and the autopsy table dried, Dr Li returned to the autopsy table. He first lifted the Han's thighs and found that the knees were already unable to bend due to rigor mortis, and the woman's upper limbs were also in a tight and unnatural state. In such a state, if embalming is to be carried out through the arteries, the stiff muscles will prevent the infusion of embalming fluid and affect the embalming results. The stiffness would also make it difficult for the body to be dressed, and the current stiff posture would make it difficult to display a peaceful appearance. As a result, Dr Li had to painstakingly bend the body's limbs to make her stiff joints move. Dr Li's left hand then began to massage the body's abdomen to ensure that the abdominal tissues were soft, while his right hand grasped the body's left and right breasts successively to check the state of their texture. Despite what appeared to be a small amount of gas being expelled, there was no spillage of fluid from the orifices on the body's pubic region. Meanwhile, Dr Liu Guofeng pushed in another female corpse. This body was that of a nun from the area, who had died of a sudden and acute illness and could not be resuscitated. Her eyes remained half-open, with a oxygen mask still on her face and a syringe on her arm.

After all the massages were completed, Doctor Li brought in the medical suction pump, mounted a rubber hose and a trocar on the suction pump's connector, switched on the pump, and inserted the long trocar forcefully through Han's vagina. The trocar effortlessly pierced through the still intact hymen of the woman's body, and even more so through the inner wall of the vagina, up through the uterus and into the intestines. Powerful suction sucked out the blood, faeces and mucus. The contents flowed down the rubber hose and into the suction pump. A noticeable smell also permeated the side of the dissection table. Using the trocar, Dr Li continued to puncture deep inside the body's abdominal cavity, adjusting the site and angle of the suction process. The little remaining urine in the bladder, as well as the last meal eaten before Han's death, which remained in her stomach, were also extracted.

After pumping out the body fluids from the Han’s abdomen, Dr Li pulled out the trocar and used cotton and two plugs to block the body's vaginal and anal openings. As the internal organs of the body were all punctured, the body's internal fluids, as well as the embalming fluid that would be injected later may leak out of the orifices on the surface of the body.

Due to the high volume of fluid being pumped out, Han's abdomen appeared remarkably hollow, as a result, her ribs and the breasts now look more prominent in comparison. Dr Li then attached a rubber tube and a trocar to the embalming machine, stabbed the trocar through Han's navel, and adjusted the pressure of the embalming machine. The embalming fluid then went through the rubber tube and into the punctured organs in Han's abdomen. By constantly adjusting the angle, Dr Li was able to embalm and stabilise Han's thoracic and abdominal organs. Han's mouth and nose continued to exhale gas squeezed out by the embalming fluid.

After the infusion was completed, Han's stomach finally returned to her previous appearance. With great effort, Dr Li lifted Han's upper body and with his left hand in a fist, continuously pressed on Han's abdomen, in order to make the embalming fluid more evenly distributed. As the trocar can not penetrate through the abdominal cavity into Han's breast, Dr Li injected a small amount of embalming fluid into the breast tissue to ensure that the they are also stablised. The embalming fluid also slightly increased the volume of the breasts, making Han's already firm breasts even more prominent. Dr Liu Guofeng has also completed the initial inspections of the nun's body, and was carrying her on his shoulder to the body racks by the wall.

As the embalming of the abdominal organs were all completed, Dr Li stuffed the Han's mouth and nose with cotton. He then took some adhesive and cotton swabs, put his right hand on Han's head and flipped open both eyelids, while his left hand applied the adhesives to the body's eye sockets, before pinched the eyelids tightly and ensured that she had a sleep-like appearance as much as possible.

Having glued the eyelids and lips in place, Dr Li applied moisturising body lotion all over the body to ensure it was in optimal condition. He had been busy for a whole day, and even though the body in front of him looked outstanding, and was the girlfriend of his colleague Dr Zhang Taihe, he didn't have the slightest feeling of attachment, and just wanted to get off work as soon as possible. Dr Liu Guofeng had an even tougher day. After the cremation of Liting, and the initial examination of the nun's body, he finally had the time to deal with the body lying on the lowest shelf. The body was a prisoner executed more than 24 hours ago. The rigor mortis already disappeared from the body, yet some unpleasant smell and body fluids were coming out. For the most serious criminals, local law requires the body to be put on public display in the square in Central Park for seven days after the execution.

Dr Li finally dressed Han in a gymnastic outfit with her name on it, a special reward she received for winning the National Championship of Amateur Gymnastics in 2022. The woman's body was then placed on a stretcher trolley, covered by a plastic sheet, and wheeled by Professor Zhang to the Health Centre on Ching-ho Street (see Pixiv account Ching-ho: https://www.pixiv.net/users/94802780). There, four members of the amateur gymnastics team, who were also Han's closest friends had been waiting for a long time to express their condolences. When the four stood in front of the body for a group photo, Professor Zhang stood far behind. Looking at the ladies, he contemplated the source of specimens for the university's anatomical specimen display room. "Which of the four is more suitable?" He wondered.

Finally, Han's body was brought to Rongji Funeral Home, just like Shuhui's. At the memorial service, she was in a black dress and stockings, lying on her back on a marble pedestal, with the effigy hanging behind her. In the effigy, she had a charming smile. Dr. Zhang Taihe did not know that his girlfriend had been executed by his colleagues until the service, and came to the funeral home to immediately after he was notified. After the memorial service, Han's body received further preservation treatment and became another important piece of the university's anatomical specimen collection.
