And most of all, they played music. The latest western dance music, hip hop, and other forms banned by the state. Young listeners would sit through the political news for a chance to hear the exciting sounds. State run radio only played local ethnic music, which they found old and boring.

Boris had smuggled many of the latest CDs with him when he arrived, which he gave to the DJ. This made him a popular figure with the PLF right from the start. He soon rose up in stature and rank, and within six months, he was organizing events himself, with the others gladly following.

For about one year, all was well. The PLF was reaching more and more people. It was estimated that Radio Free Petrova had more listeners than the state run stations. They had to move around all the time, and use different antennae on different frequencies. But this made it almost like a game, to find their signal every night.

Boris organized many daring raids on government facilities, and was even thinking of a mass protest. If 50 people went on a march, the ISS would smash it. But if 50,000 were marching? It would take the army to stop it. Any brutality on their part could be the spark for revolution. Freedom hung in the balance. Everything was going according to plan.

Boris had a personal assistant named Nikola. She was hard working, dedicated, and even more fanatical about the cause than he was. She was single, so besides her dull factory job, she devoted all of her time to the PLF. They became close, and eventually became lovers as well.

She was indispensable to him, and as soon as the assignment was over, he would ask her to marry him. He longed to tell her his real story, but he was too well trained to let his emotions get the best of him. But he felt that by holding back something that important from her, he was almost cheating on her in a way. This pained him in his heart. It was something he just had to handle.

However, one day there was a problem at the PLF: a crew was sent out to post flyers in the park overnight. But in the morning, not only was the park flyer-free, the crew never returned. Everyone laid low for a while, and when they reassembled for the first time, they discussed the possibilities.

"Have we been compromised?" asked Nikola.

"I'm the last recruit, and it certainly wasn't me" said Boris, looking her right in the eye.

"I believe you dear" she said.

After some discussion, it was decided that they crew must have been unlucky, and must have been stumbled on by an agent from the ISS. They were mourned, but the PLF had to get back to business.

A few weeks later, there was another setback. The ISS raided a seemingly empty office building, and confiscated transmission equipment, and half of the CDs they owned. Again, there was much debate.

"Were they tipped off, or did they find the location through detection?" asked one.

"They could have triangulated the source of the radio waves" said Boris. "If they had the right equipment."

"If that is the case, than Radio Free Petrova is doomed. They'll pick off our stations one by one" said Nikola.

This seemed to be the case, because over the next week, their other five transmitters were located and destroyed. Their DJs were arrested, and their music gone.

One of their DJs appeared on TV a few weeks later, recanting his story.

"What I did was wrong. I tried to expose the masses to the evil decadent music from the west. I do not deserve to live" he said.

"They brainwashed him!" declared Nikola. "Sergie would never say that! What did those monsters do to him?"

"I don't know, but we need to be careful. Our best tool has been ruined. We need to get out and do more work by hand" said Boris.

So it was back to the grunt work, trying to get the grassroots effort going. After a few days, Boris had an idea.

"Look. The young people are very upset that our radio station has been taken off the air. Why don't we get a huge rally going downtown? I bet we could get thousands to turn out. If the people on the street see thousands of protesters, they might be willing to join in too. We could turn this around, and make our biggest defeat into our biggest victory!"

Everyone cheered. It was a grand idea. The planning started right away.

All was set. Friday night, the masses would assemble, and march on the mayors office, downtown, requesting that the radio station be restarted. Each PLF member had commitments from hundreds of people to be there. This was going to get the ball really rolling.

But Friday afternoon, something was wrong. Boris went to see the forklift driver who was bringing his friends from the university. He wasn't at work. He also looked for the janitor who's brother was in a youth gang. They had been recruited to show up as well, but the janitor was missing.

Immediately, Boris knew something was wrong. He had to warn the others. This was no coincidence. He called Nikola first. A call to his lover would not raise suspicions, even if they were listening in. They spoke in code.

"Nikola, how is your day my love?" he said. A code that there was trouble.

"Oh, the usual darling" she replied. Meaning: tell me more.

"That's nice. Will I see you early tonight?" Meaning: we need to change plans.

"No, I have to work." This was a signal that she understood, and would work on it.

"All right. See you at home." In other words, meet at the PLF.

On his next break, Boris also called Vladimir, and in code, told him that they were a no-go for the night. He also tried another PLF member, risking the call, but there was no answer. Damn. They might have gotten to Alexander already.

Boris was eager for the work day to end, but it seemed to take forever. Finally, he met up with Nikola at the rendezvous point, and waited for the others.

Nobody showed.

After an hour, they sneaked out, and headed for the park. It was crowded this time of night, and they could blend it. They kept one eye out for security, and another for friends. They saw neither. Until almost an hour later. They spotted Ivan. Two men walked with him, one of whom held something to his back. A gun? They didn't try to find out. The went the other direction, and hid in the woods.

Back deep in the woods was a small cave which they had set up as a 'safe house' if they needed to disappear for a few days. It was stocked with food and water, radios and supplies. It appeared untouched, so they went inside.

"Nikola, it pains me, but I must tell you something. I have a way to get to America. I want for us to leave tonight. I love Petrova, but we must leave. It is too dangerous here right now."

"No. I will not leave my country. You can go flee, but I will remain behind."

"Nikola! We can return later. But they have arrested so many! The will be looking for us!"

"No, they are looking for you. I found this today" she said, handing him a crumpled piece of paper. It showed the names of the top ten most wanted in Petrova. Number four on the list: Boris Mirnov.

"How did you get that?" he asked.

"The ISS who arrested Alexander had it on them. It fell in the struggle. You are the one who is in deep trouble my love. It is you who must hide. Go ahead, leave the country."

"No Nikola. I will not leave this place without you. Please come with me!"

"No. I stay. If will not go."

"Then I will stay too."

"You are in danger. We must hide you. My aunt lives out in the country. I am due a vacation. Come with me. We can stay with her far from the city where all of the heat is."

They walked to the edge of town, and rode in the car Boris had purchased, until the reached a small farming town. Nikola traded the car for a horse, and they continued on down the winding country road.

It was morning, and they were exhausted. But they were less than ten miles from her aunt's home. When the arrived, they were warmly greeted. They were so tired that they immediately went to sleep, even before they ate.

In the morning, Boris and Nikola had a good meal for the first time in a day. They were safe for now. The ISS didn't have enough resources to cover the entire countryside. But there was always the threat of a raid.

Boris stayed indoors, so that not even the neighbors would spot him. They could not afford for anyone to know that a strange man was staying at the farmhouse. Word of that could reach the wrong ears. After a few days, he felt so cooped up! He and Nikola had to sleep in separate bedrooms. He missed the feel of her body. And he felt like a prisoner, except at night when they could go out for long walks together, if the moon wasn't too full in the sky.

One day, Nikola's aunt had some news for them.

"In town, there is word that the ISS seeks a man who has fled the city. They tell us that ISS agents are going town to town. You will not be safe here for long.

"But we can't go back to the city. It is worse there" said Nikola.

"I will leave. I don't want to endanger you. I'll take my chances in the woods."

"You are a city boy. You will be eaten by bears, or freeze. No, you must stay here" said Nikola.

"But then I'll be caught, and you will be in trouble for hiding me."

"Perhaps there is a way" said Nikola's aunt.

She ran off to her bedroom. Boris looked at Nikola, who just shrugged her shoulders. A few minutes later, Aunt Karina returned.

"Here, put these on" she said, holding out some folded clothes to Boris. Did she think that peasant clothes would fool the ISS?

But he had to humor her. So he went into the bedroom, pulled the curtain closed, and laid the clothes out on the bed. He was shocked when he saw what she had brought him. They weren't clothes for a peasant man. They were clothes for a peasant *woman*.

"Come on Boris, lets see!" said Nikola teasingly.

"No way! They'll see me and...."

"Boris, do this for me" she said.

Reluctantly, he put on the clothes. Apparently, they hadn't invented bras yet in the countryside. They had a large corset, which he struggled to get into. Next were long white socks, more like hose than anything else. Finally, a peasant dress and a bonnet. He looked in the mirror and laughed. He looked like a man!
